I'm at Panera Bread, enjoying the morning sun and a mild breeze. As I'm thinking about what it is to serve others, I look up and see a lady leaving the store carrying a purse over her arm, a cup of coffee in each hand - and two paper bags in her mouth!
I should have jumped up and offered to open her car door. That would have been kind. But in the same moment I thought about that, I considered that...
- She couldn't say "yes, thanks", if I'd asked if she needed help.
- She might think I was flirting.
- I might have to rummage through her purse to find her car keys. No way.
- Honestly, it was a lot more fun to watch her make it all the way to her car without dropping anything.
I should have stood at my outdoor coffee table and applauded her skill and determination.
Instead I just smiled and told you about it.
