As I mentioned in my previous post, I've continued to read comments of leaders, responding to Willow Creek's REVEAL study. This Spiritual Life Survey has resulted in a myriad of opinions, interpretations and bashing. I'm still amazed at the tumultuous debate by so many who haven't experienced Willow or who have no interest in learning (see my earlier post here). Somewhere in the debate many have missed the reality of thousands who have come to Jesus because of ministries like Willow Creek. Many have missed the fact that over 3/4 of Willow's surveyed people are beyond satisfied in their spiritual journey in the context of that local church. This survey has stirred an appropriate interest and conversation about we develop as the kingdom people God made us to be.
But, it's about to get really personal. For the past year our senior team has been processing questions and strategies of spiritual formation in our church. In just a few days we'll be asking our people to participate in the Spiritual Life Survey to help us understand just where we are. Although hundreds of churches are now partnering in the REVEAL study, as our people engage this survey - it becomes very personal. It is about their journey with and toward Christ. It is about our shared experience and leadership as a local church. It is personal. It really matters.
It matters because people matter. They matter to God and they matter to us. Their journey to get to know God matters. Their development as Christ-followers matter. Ultimately, the kingdom of God matters. After all, this is his deal. These are his people. Man, it matters!
I'm sure I'll be posting more over the next several months about our ongoing experience, not only with this survey, but our response to it. Stay tuned.
